Rise From the Ashes - Pilgrimage Agenda (38 +/- Miles)
We will be starting at St. Mary’s, Monroe on Friday, July 19th and finishing at Ste. Anne de Detroit--the Archdiocese’s newest Basilica—on Sunday, July 21st. Along the way we will be visiting and/or staying overnight at Catholic Churches/locations where Fr. Gabriel Richard served including St. Mary’s in Monroe, St. Mary’s in Rockwood, and Knights of Columbus in Wyandotte. Our destination, finishing at Ste. Anne, Patroness Saint of Detroit, Ste. Anne de Detroit was the parish where Gabriel Richard served as Pastor, and he is buried within the church’s side chapel.
This is a special year, with the National Eucharistic Congress occurring in Indianapolis at the same time, our theme of this event will be focused on the Eucharist. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
- Will refreshments or lite snacks be available along the walk? Yes, we will have cars driving with us along that route that will have both cold refreshments and snacks available as we walk. We encourage all participants to bring something with them on the day(s) they are walking to help us have enough for this purpose.
- What if I overheat, experience an injury, feel sick, or need a break? Please notify those around you if you have any issues of concern due to overheating, injury, just need a break from the walking, etc. We will have support cars riding along with us as we walk and can provide first aide if needed or have you ride along in the air-conditioned car as you are needing to.
- What about transportation back to my car, parked at the starting point? We ask that you plan for your own transportation from a friend or family member for these purposes as we cannot guarantee availability for everyone. If you are stuck and do not have the needed transportation, please do not hesitate to bring it to our attention as soon as possible and we will do our best to accommodate you. Some pilgrims at previous events have called for an Uber to pick them up when needed.
- Is overnight stay available on Friday or Saturday Nights? Yes, please notify us in advance if you plan on staying overnight either Friday or Saturday. We need to make certain we are accommodating for the number of persons planning to do so. St. Mary's in Rockwood will be hosting us overnight on Friday. Knights of Columbus in Wyandotte will be hosting us overnight on Saturday. If you plan on arranging transportation home for the evening and return the next morning, you are welcome to do so.
- You may be sleeping on a hard floor, please plan accordingly; bring a sleeping bag, mat, pillow etc. These may be loaded into a car prior to the beginning of the walk that day and will be transported to the final destination for that day.
- Anyone under 18-years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
- Restrooms are available at each site; however, showers may not be available.
- As these locations have been generous in providing accommodations, please be respectful of the facilities and help show appreciation by helping to clean up so that we leave the location as good or better than when we arrived.
- Do you have any tips on preparing for the pilgrimage?
- Find a good pair (or 2 pairs) of walking shoes to use on your walk.
- Don’t forget to break them in, well in advance of the pilgrimage.
- If you do not already walk on a regular basis, begin as soon as possible by taking daily walks to condition yourself. Gradually, increase mileage as the pilgrimage date(s) approach.
- Take care of your feet. During the two weeks before the pilgrimage, soak your feet in salted warm water, rub them down with cream, and make sure that your toenails are clipped.
- Women who wear high heels should stop wearing them one month before the pilgrimage in order to prepare their calf muscles for the walk.
- Work out to build the other muscles in your body.
- What should I bring to the Pilgrimage?
- You may want to carry a small/light backpack or side pack to have a couple easy access items with you while walking.
- Note: You may bring extra items such as spare shoes, socks, clothing, over-night needs etc. which can be kept in the courtesy vehicle while you are walking. (Put your name on bags & backpacks)
- If you are planning on staying overnight.
- Sleeping Bag &/or mat, Pillow, blanket, etc.
- Personal items, toiletries, etc.)
- Medication - If you use any medication on a regular basis, please don’t forget to take it with you.
- For Footcare: In a sandwich or quart sized zipper bag, pack the following items:
- Moleskin (one or two packages should be sufficient)
- A small pair of scissors for cutting moleskin
- Variety of band-aids (toe specific ones are great!)
- Antibiotic ointment
- Desitin (see below for explanation)
- Ace-wrap if needed in past for feet/ankles
- Several pairs of socks and one or two pair of walking shoes
- Umbrella - If weather is calling for rain. (Spare dry clothing to change into if needed)
- A Rosary - We will be praying the Rosary regularly along with many other prayers (printouts will be available)
- Bring $ for your own miscellaneous expenses ($40 +/-) for stops - (Mitten Cafe, Ice Cream in Trenton, Contribution Parishes that we stop at (not required), etc.)
- Something to Share: Food/Granola Bars, Extra Waters, Small Gatorades, etc.
- You may want to carry a small/light backpack or side pack to have a couple easy access items with you while walking.
- What should I keep in mind during the walk?
- Keep yourself well-nourished and hydrated. Eat foods high in carbohydrates and drink plenty of water.
- Walk in groups, try to not walk alone and if you see someone falling behind, let them catch up and check with them that they are doing ok.
- During the rest stops, avoid cooling down the muscles of your legs too rapidly. Doing it gradually will help you to avoid cramping.
- If you experience any medical problem along the way, please inform someone you are walking with ASAP so that we can get you the needed attention. Courtesy vehicles will be available in case you need to break from walking and/or feel you cannot continue walking - don't be too proud to know your limit.
- Change your socks and/or shoes as often as practicable.
- If you have areas that are rubbing together (i.e., toes that overlap or are rubbing against each other), place a layer of Desitin or some other such diaper rash product to act as a grease. Desitin is an amazing help for blister prevention. And if a blister does still form, the Desitin will protect it and offer some relief.
